About Us

The German YMCA in London (Young Men's Christian Association) was founded in 1860. It is one of the oldest YMCAs in London. As a Christian movement we stand for respect and freedom for all, tolerance and understanding between people of different opinion, religion, and ethnic background. In several practical ways we serve the needs of the community. We welcome people of different Christian traditions, other religious faiths and of none.

Motto: We will serve the Lord for he is our God. (Joshua 24:18)

We provide cultural and leisure-time activities, as well as advice, support and help for German-speaking people, their international friends, and the local community. Our doors are open to members and non-members alike. Over its remarkable history, the German YMCA has evolved into an international and inclusive organisation, sustaining its mission through innovative projects and partnerships with the local and wider community.

Our community programme continues to thrive, attracting new members and participants within a diverse range of activities. From our Classical Music Concerts to our MiniClub for babies and toddlers drop-in sessions, to the newer additions of GYMCA Talk Series and Out & About excursions to various venues. We also proudly run The Schubert Society of Britain.

The Lancaster Hall Hotel, owned and operated as a separate company by the German YMCA, has been a cornerstone of our success, generating financial resources to sustain and expand our community programmes and charitable programmes and partnerships. For over 50 years, our Kensington Gardens Hostel has welcomed youth and school groups, offering them the chance to experience London’s world-class museums, theatres, and cultural events—opportunities that inspire and educate.
