Objectives and General ConditionsBeing and having an au pair should be equally useful to both the host family and the au pair. Au pairs live in a host family and take part in family life. In return for housework and childcare they receive free accommodation and board as well as pocket money. Working as an au pair gives young people the opportunity to improve their knowledge of a foreign language, to get to know their host country, its people and culture. They get the chance to broaden their intercultural understanding and to further their personal development. All this will have a positive effect on their professional careers. An au pair's stay promotes exchange and understanding among people of different nationalities and contributes to a truly united Europe.
